Supporting Anxiety, Stress, and Depression with CranioSacral Therapy

Anxiety, stress, and depression are becoming more and more of a common diagnosis in our society.  As Mental Health Awareness week happens at the start of May, it brings to light how many people suffer with mental health concerns and related physical pain. Statistics are rising, and it’s becoming more common among children and adolescents as well. More than 4 million Canadian men and women are diagnosed with anxiety annually and it is twice as likely to occur in women than men. Technology, social media, and the need for instant gratification has produced an increase in anxiety and stress in our world. So much so that the term ‘FOMO’ or the Fear of Missing Out has become a common word in people’s vocabulary.

When We Feel Stressed …Supporting Anxiety, Stress, and Depression with CranioSacral Therapy

The mind can face anxiety and stress as a normal response for our own safety. When we feel stressed, our bodies produce hormones to prepare us for a ‘fight or flight’ situation.  This creates a shift in our nervous system and increases our heart rate, blood pressure for example. When this happens regularly, our bodies and minds start to suffer.  Anxiety in the body can cause a feeling of restricted breathing, muscle tension, headaches, digestive problems, or general aches and pains.

While diagnoses vary, as well as the severity, CranioSacral Therapy can have many benefits. It can offer relief from chronic pain, headaches, stress, depression, and anxiety by supporting the nervous system. This method uses a light touch that focuses on calming the Central Nervous System.  This helps to release tensions or restrictions in the body, allowing cerebrospinal fluid to flow freely, assisting in better tissue function. Emotions, as well as physical traumas, can be remembered in the body’s tissues.  As the body shifts from ‘fight or flight’ to ‘rest and repair’, emotions and tensions can be released.

Helping people as young as 11, and seeing the results CranioSacral Therapy can have after a few sessions, is always rewarding as young people can also suffer from anxiety, stress, and depression while learning to navigate their way in the world, just as us adults do.
